Bayern vs Manchester United (CL) - 30 Mar 10
Overall, Bayern are the better team, so well deserved win for the least. There was no luck for Utd as they lost 90% of all the 50-50 balls. Chances were there for Rooney to kill the game early but was not taken. Bayern too had their fair share of chances to bring the game to an end during the early half.
There was nothing much Fergie could have done better in terms of the starting 11 he picked. First of all, I had to agree with him that when playing a CL match, you had to dictate the midfield for the least chance to win the game. However, I would then only change 1 player that from Scholes to Valencia with Park playing center. Why ?
Bayern's wings are fast and tricky, so by playing both nani and valencia who are fast enough could have done a better job then park partnering evra in defending the right flank of Bayern's. Also, they might be more effective when countering.
Let's analyse the match itself, Bayern's tactic was straight enough, tight marking and close down all the way. You could see that whenever a United player is on the ball, a triangle of Bayern's player will be formed around. That gives no room for any penetration for United. United was in anxiety and had no solution for that, so they becomes static at their assigned position. You could not see those usual overlapping runs that could deal serious damage. Even playing with the line ups, I would have let scholes be the central man distributing the balls, Carrick holding and fletcher to support Rooney as much as possible. These 3 men could cover each other when out of position. That's the point for having a 3 men midfield.
Bayern was lucky to have the result going their way as the 2 goals are not the sort of goals that you are likely to see in CL matches. Well, I admit Rooney's one was some sort of the same but it still need the death touches from the Roo man.
What's next for SAF and United now ? Rooney sprained his ankle and will be a serious doubt for Saturday's almost a title deciding clash with Chelsea. Hmmm... I personally do not feel that the winner of the game will be as good as winning the league but it just puts you in a better position. There are 5 more games after that and anything could happen. I reckon this season will go down to the last game before the title is decided. Then now for the 2nd leg of the Quarter-Final of CL, if Rooney is not able to play then i think it's over for United wonderful CL campaign for the 3 consecutive seasons.
We'll see what's the condition like before any predictions can be made.
